 Bereshit is the first word in the Torah. The root, rosh means start or beginning. Great insight can be seen in adding the meanings of the letters to the word.

 Bet means house. This can be translated to include not only a building that one lives in, but the entire family including servants and one's possessions.

 Resh means poverty unless preceded with a yod (which represents G-d). It would then be pronounced Yeresh in which case it becomes inheritance.

 Alef is the first letter of the Alefbet and is understood to be El (G-d). Its value is one and also the first letter in the word echad (one or unity).

 Shin is said to represent a tooth. It has the appearance of a molar which is used for chewing. It is the first letter in Shaddai meaning Self Sufficient. It is one of the names of HaShem.

 Yod is the smallest letter of the Alefbet. It is physically as high as most of the other letters but does not reach low like the others. It is said to represent HaShem because it is the first letter in His Name.

 Tov is the final letter in the Alefbet. The word "tov" means "good".

Bereshet is translated, "In the beginning", but when adding the meanings of the individual letters the translation comes out more like this. "In the beginning of the house and inheritance, the only one, of Shaddai (the self sufficient) YHVH it is finished (and good).

 The relationship between Heaven, sha-mie-yim, and water, mie-yim, connects with the Living Water given by Yeshua to those who seek it. Again the Shin reminds us of Shaddai the "self sufficient" or "all sufficient" one. The spelling of living water mayim chayi. Again the chet (spirit) is attached to yod (G-d). The nature of water is that if you are in it or touched by it, you become wet.

The last thing G-d created was the Sabbath day. Originally days were not named, they were numbered. From Genesis 1:5, the first day was called echad. This connects us with the Shmah which says that the L-rd our G-d, the L-rd is echad (one).

There is much to say about the names of the days of the week as given by HaShem. Notice how often the yod appears in the words. Also notice when chet first appears. Compare that with the content of day five and six remembering that chet means spirit and life.

In Chapter two G-d gave Adam the task of caring for Gan Edan (the garden of Eden). He was instructed not to take for food the fruit of the tree which G-d had placed in the center of the garden, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam could eat of all the other trees as he wished.

Much intrigue surrounds the nature of the fruit of the tree of the "KNOWLEDGE of good and evil". If an apple tree produces apples, what do you think would be the fruit of a tree whos name is "knowledge of good and evil"? The nature of what happened appears to be that Chava (Eve) decided for herself what was good and evil over G-ds instructions. It seems that the tree might just as well have been labeled, "the tree of freedom of choice" or "free will." HaShem did not have to give them a choice. He placed that tree right in the middle of the garden so that Adam and Chava were forced to pass by it as they cared for the garden.

When they were apparently being very obedient to the command, HaShem then placed the serpent in the garden for the purpose of enticing them to eat. Why? He wanted them to have free will but not by command or creation design. He wanted them to chose for themselves what is good and what is evil and then, by an act of their own free will, chose to obey Him over every obstacle He placed in their path, using Satan as His agent in this matter.

He knew that the world would become very evil, but it was the only way He could create intelligent beings like Himself to fellowship with. That is why He created us in His own image after His likeness. He wants children of intelligence not robots which simply operate according to design.

I sit at a computer many hours every day. If my computer only does what it was designed to do and all the programs work according to specifications, and I have no other source of companionship, then my life becomes very boring. This is why the Internet is so successful. People want companionship, interaction, with creative thought.

I appreciate my wife and my children. They are not boring. We communicate openly and often have disagreements. This is what makes life interesting. G-d created it that way on purpose. We should not have guilt because we have failed Him, we should simply get up, dust ourselves off and again climb over every obstacle that interferes with our relationship with Him which we desire so much.
